Women made of the same weather that surrounds them.
Mythic feminine figures in oil, mixed media and metallic leaf. The circle keeps returning — it is the format cultures reserve for what they revere.

Nothing in this group at the moment.
A few commissions a year. Not more.
A commissioned figure takes three to five months and follows the same rules as everything else here — the circle, the built surface, the figure allowed to dissolve into what surrounds her.

The figure and the ground are made of the same substance. She dissolves into wind, water and birds, and comes back as gold.
I paint women who are not contained by their own outlines. A figure begins as a body and ends as weather — hair becoming wind, a shoulder becoming water, an arm opening into birds. What holds them is the circle. I keep returning to the tondo because it is the shape cultures reserve for what they revere, and I see no reason to reserve it for saints and kings.
The other thread is material. Gold leaf, relief, surfaces built up until they carry light the way carved stone does. Persian ornament and Achaemenid relief hold meaning in the material itself, not only in what is depicted. Those two things — the circle and the worked surface — are what I am actually painting.
A photograph flattens gold leaf into a beige rectangle.
Come and stand in front of one. Relief and gold only exist properly in raking light. Visits are by appointment and there is no expectation that you buy anything.

Once a month. One painting, two hundred words, from the studio.
